History of Covenant International University  and Seminary

In April 2012, the idea of Covenant International University and Seminary came into existence by Rev. Dr. Delphina Chikamele Mitima-Samuel who shared with her colleagues – Dr. Morris Durman, Dr. Culbreth Edward and Bishop John Praise – her aspiration of “want[ing] to open a small Bible school” that would focus only on the unadulterated Word of God. Through visionary lens, Dr. Edward encouraged Dr. Mitima-Samuel to consider establishing a public university that would be accessible and global for “all Christians” rather than a small Bible College.

After contemplating Dr. Edward’s suggestion, and recognizing the possibility of starting “a college-university that many would revere for decades to come – with the help of the Almighty God”, Dr. Mitima-Samuel promptly arranged a meeting with the individuals aforementioned to collaborate on the initiative. In addition, to aid the process of registering the university in Houston, Texas, Dr. Mitima-Samuel used her resources, accomplishments, and experiences as a university professor. As such, a year later – April 26, 2013, Covenant International University and Seminary was successfully certified as a non-profit corporation in Houston, Texas.

Shortly after its establishment in the United States of America, and insistent on the commitment to provide global accessibility for Christians who desire higher education in biblical Christian theology, Covenant International University and Seminary opened multiple campuses: Freetown, Sierra Leone – West Africa (2015), Lagos, Nigeria – West Africa (2016), and North York, Ontario – Canada (2020). Thus, solidifying the institution’s mandate of being an international Christian university that is created to proliferate honesty, knowledge and wisdom. To date, the university has received accreditation and membership by various prestigious accreditation organizations such as the Accrediting Commission for Biblical Higher Education, and the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

In light of the history of the university, Dr. Delphina Chikamele Mitima-Samuel – the founding president attests that “with the power of dreams and wishful thinking, your dreams can become a reality.”
